Blues Tabs minus: Is this for you?

1. The video style, focusing on the guitar and leaving the player headless, can be a bit disconcerting, if you’d rather watch Griff as he explains the lessons.

2. There are no fingerings or picking indications on the tab (a common problem with tab notation), although everything is shown on the videos, so you can easily pick up the fingerings there.

3. This course is aimed primarily at beginners and intermediates, so advanced blues players won’t find enough to challenge them here.

4. There’s no DVD option, which is fine so long as you’ve got the capacity to download some pretty hefty video files!

Once you master guitar tab, you can learn many of your favourite blues classics from blues tabs. Learning the 12 bar blues progression is a vital part of learning to play the blues guitar. It underpins many of the classic songs we all know and love, not just in blues but in many other styles of popular music, such as soul, jazz, metal and rock.

There are many variations on the 12 bar blues form, but the most basic form is a I-IV-V chord pattern. As an example, let’s look at the key of A, which allows you to play a 12 bar progression just using simple open chords. We’ll use dominant 7th major chords, as they give a lovely bluesy sound, so the chords you’ll need for the I-IV-V pattern are A7-D7-E7.

I-I-I-I-IV-IV-I-I-V-IV-I-I is the pattern of the 12 bar progression.

A7-A7-A7-A7-D7-D7-A7-A7-E7-D7-A7-A7 is the chord pattern in A.

This 12 bar progression can be played simply, with four beats to the bar. Use downstrokes at the start, then change this rhythm around as you get fluent with the pattern. Even if you’re not consciously aware of it, this 12 bar pattern is rolling along underneath, like a heartbeat, solid and repetitive, while the song unfolds above it.

Listen to any great blues guitarist play, and you can hear that they are soloing around the basic 12 bar blues. Once you’ve mastered the underlying 12 bar blues rhythm, then you can try creating your own solos by jamming around the basic chords, either with friends or over a recorded rhythm track. Tablature (tab or tabs for short) is a quick and effective way to learn to play guitar songs, and blues tabs are a great way to learn to play blues guitar. Tab is an easy to read form of musical notation, often used for writing out songs for the guitar and other fretted instruments.

The main benefit of tab is that it provides a picture of the fretboard showing you where the notes are played. This makes it very simple to visualize the notes and play them on the guitar as you read the tabs. You can learn to read blues tabs very quickly, and master songs for guitar without the need to spend a lot of time learning how to read music.

Tab tells you exactly on which string and at which fret to play the note, which is very useful as most notes can be played in various different position on the guitar fretboard. So using guitar tab can take the guesswork out of  deciding which fret you should play your guitar chords and notes on. This is often not clear in standard musical notation for guitar players, although sometimes frets may be indicated by placing roman numerals below the music staff.

It is important to remember that guitar tabs will be read upside down in comparison to how the strings are on your guitar. So, while your strings read from top to bottom EADGBE, tab reads from top to bottom EBGDAE. Each of the single columns represents a chord fingering.

If you begin reading guitar tabs and chords instead of standard notation, you’ll find yourself able to get through a piece more quickly. However, the main drawback with guitar tab is that it generally doesn’t indicate the length or timing of the notes. This can be a problem with precise musical forms, but is not so much of an issue with blues guitar tabs, as often the player is improvising and timing can be flexible with blues music. When you can make your own decisions on the timing of the piece that you are playing, blues tabs for guitar give you a quick and effective way to learn to play a blues riff or chord that you already know well to hear.
